Drowning prevention safety tips

Most child drowning incidents happen in swimming pools. But, summer is over, which means kids won’t be doing much more swimming if at all until next year. That doesn’t mean that the risk of accidental drowning goes away when pools are closed.

Bathtub drowning is the second leading drowning risk for children, after pools. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, there were 660 incidents of submersion involving children under the age of five, from 2005 to 2009, resulting in 431 fatalities.

Children can drown in only a few inches of water. Here are some tips that can help keep your kids safe in the tub:

• Never leave kids alone in or near a tub with water in it. Kids can drown in only a small amount of water.

• Don’t leave a child in a tub under the care of another child.

• Consider putting child safety locks on bathroom doors and toilet seats.

• Learn CPR. Every second counts in a drowning emergency.
