Chicago Police Officer in Training Seriously Injured on Chicago Expressway

A good Samaritan rookie Chicago police officer was seriously injured on Chicago’s Stevenson expressway earlier this morning after he left his vehicle to assist another motorist. The officer, 28 year old Danny Vazquez, was struck around 12:45 a.m. while he attempted to render aid to a vehicle that had crashed into the median in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 near the Damen exit. According to Illinois State Police, the officer was struck by another vehicle as he approached the one car Chicago car accident. The officer, who was scheduled to graduate from the Police academy on November 16, 2010, was awarded his star only one week ago. He was recently sent out to work a probationary five day street detail with the Gresham police district according to Assistant Deputy Supt Howard Lodding. He was slated to return to the street on November 1st.

The injured officer was rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. He reportedly suffered a brain injury as a result of the crash. The motorist responsible for the Chicago car accident was issued citations for failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving without a license, and improper lane usage. Local authorities are still investigating the expressway car crash.
