Chicago Pedestrian Killed in Semi Accident; Police Initiate Crosswalk Safety Program

A Chicago man was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a large tractor trailer at the corner of Chicago Ave. and Ashland Ave. in the city’s Wicker Park neighborhood. According to the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit, 59 year-old Stephen Richardson was crossing the street around 10:30 p.m. when he hit by an 18 wheeler semi truck. Richardson, of the 2900 block of South Michigan Avenue, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County following the fatal accident. He was pronounced dead by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office at 10:30 p.m. Charges related to the pedestrian-truck accident have not been filed according to Police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak. The Chicago Police’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the fatality.

In a related story, the Chicago police have reinstated a sting operation aimed at cracking down on motorists that fail to yield to pedestrians. The program, which was announced on Monday, is aimed at Chicago’s East Lakeview neighborhood. Undercover police officers posing as pedestrians will be ticketing and fining motorists that fail to yield at pedestrian crosswalks.

The latest sting operation is aimed at preventing accidents such as the one that claimed the life of Stephen Richardson. The family of the deceased pedestrian might have a wrongful death claim against the trucker and the trucking company.
