Pedestrian related accidents claimed 4,092 lives in 2009 according to the NHTSA. This figure amounts to eleven deaths a day. The administration also reported 59,000 pedestrian injuries in 2009. While these figures show an overall decrease since 1995, the numbers are still alarming. Chicago pedestrians should be careful to use crosswalks and intersection signals at all times. Pedestrians should also make sure to pay extra attention to surrounding traffic at particularly busy intersections and during peak traffic times. Also, the NHTSA statistics reveal that 70% of pedestrian fatalities occur at night. Pedestrians should take extra precaution when using Chicago streets at night and also consider wearing bright clothes.
